Being the first choice for people who want a ”taste of Eastern Europe”, Prague gets an unproportional large share of weekend tourists. Luckily, there is an alternative destination offering a similar experience just two hours away.
The small city of Český Krumlov represents the essence of Bohemian life in Czech Republic. Situated on the Vltava River, just as Prague, it offers a fascinating mix of medieval, renaissance, and baroque architecture. As an UNESCO world heritage site, it’s hard to find a more picturesque city. It also a perfect weekend getaway full of restaurants, bars, and happenings throughout the year.
Leave your bags at Hotel Ruze and head for lunch at Pivovar Eggenberg, the city’s own brewery. Reminiscent of U Fleku in Prague, it’s one of the oldest in the country. Flaneur the cobblestone streets and get lost in a myriad of alleys, some of them so narrow you have to walk sideways to get through. End your day at the Schwarzenberg Palace, overlooking the city with its more than 300 rooms. Not quite as big as the Prague Castle, but much more charming.
How do I get there?
Where: 180 km south of Prague, 200 km west of Vienna.
When: Early spring and fall. The Schwarzenberg Palace is open April-October. An International Music Festival is held three weeks in August.
How: By train or bus from Prague in less then two hours. The train station is situated 3 km south of the city. Roughly three hours drive from Prague or Vienna.
